The Seattle Times sent me an email this morning with a link to the live feed of my state’s electors casting their votes. Never before had I considered watching this ritual. Only this year, it was more than a ritual. In Arizona, a group of fake electors tried to deliver the state’s votes for Trump. The actual electors, because of security concerns, met in an undisclosed location. Washington State elector Jack Arends was told last month that he is terminally ill. His voice breaking, he said, “It was important for me to do this one thing that I could do, while I still can.” What are the things that we can still do for ourselves and our country? I know one. Wear a mask.

The end is coming
by Sue Robin, Los Angeles, California

We the people have been jumping over hurdles for the last four years. In November 2020, we were energized and thought we had, finally, jumped the last one. Only to be slapped in the face with over fifty lawsuits claiming this was a rigged election. Republican judge after Republican judge (some who Trump had appointed himself), and even three on the Supreme Court, all said there is no evidence, and the legal issues are not valid. A frivolous lawsuit. He attempted to coerce several Republican election officials to call the election for him, though clearly Biden won.

Today, the Electoral College met and did their duty, and have announced the winner. One would think that now would be a good time for a concession speech, but, no, this ersatz President is trying to muster Republicans to contest this election, yet again, on January 6, 2021, when the Electoral College officially sends results to Congress. This action has no hope of succeeding. Zero! It will not give the election to Trump, it will only serve to continue his legacy of divisiveness.

All this emphasis on his loss or his inability to accept it, and none on the losses of 300,000 families who will not see their loved ones again. Any word about the pandemic has been only to claim his own glory for having gotten the job of creating a vaccine done more quickly than ever before. He gives no credit to the scientists who have worked for ten years developing new ways to approach vaccine making or the ones who came through now. The narcissist is alive.

There is a glimmer of hope, a light shining, with the distribution of the vaccine, that there is an end in sight to the pandemic. There may be many more deaths before that end, but we all can feel it coming.

There is an end to Trump as well, and we can feel that coming, too. On January 20, 2021, he will have been officially fired from his position and we the people will have a new president. One who will honor the constitution, act with dignity and respect for all people, and show us a path towards right action. I am counting the days.

  1. Yes, January 20th can’t come soon enough. It’s time to eliminate the Electoral College so we never go through such a ridulous and harrowing time again. The popular vote should be enough! But Trump has succeeded in convincing many of his cult followers that the election was a fraud. What lies ahead?
