Second day of foggy morning. Eaton fire at 73% and Palisades at 43%. Things are calmer here. There are now teams of DWP workers restoring the infrastructure. Some areas are allowing owners to return home. One firefighter found a woman’s wedding ring in the ashes. Another family found their safe and, while the outside was a bit melted, the contents were intact.
Way more angels than devils. 36 arrested for violating curfew or theft. Thousands donating clothes, food. World Central Kitchen has provided over 180,000 meals so far. Local restaurants are feeding the firefighters as well.
The death toll is creeping up, as is the list of missing.
The shock will rattle us for a long time, but now there is a pivot towards clean-up and what comes next. Rules have been altered to allow children to attend schools out of their district. Once lots are cleared of toxic waste, a trailer or mother-in-law unit can be placed there.
I am delighted that some of the red tape has been cut, but hope that the requirements for rebuilding will include fireproof roofs, decks made from fireproof materials, and other changes that will help prevent or at least limit a future fire event.
Like with the earthquakes that strike here, there will be continuing aftershocks for years to come.
